We had another week together creating wonderful first grade memories. One of the highlights was reading the book Enemy Pie, discussing the importance of getting to know someone new and reaching out to include this person in your circle of friends. We then stood together with our school to recognize the importance of caring, inclusion and safety in our school and community.
In reading we continued to work with text features in nonfiction books. One of the favorites this week was looking for bold text and learning new vocabulary words. Some students even used bold text in their own writing during science later in the week. We are finishing up our geometry and fraction unit and math and focusing on telling time both on analog clocks and digital clocks. The standard in first grade is telling time to the hour and half hour so this has also been a way to connect with our knowledge of fractions too! Our fantastic family volunteers came in to lead an Art Infusion lesson on perspective. Students used colored pencils and rulers to create a scene with a train track heading into the distance. They are on display outside the classroom so be sure to give them a look. In Science students are exploring sound waves. This week's experiment was called Musical Rulers. Students used both wooden and plastic rulers to explore how vibrations and pitch changes based on the length of the ruler hanging over the table edge and the material of the ruler. A highlight from the week was definitely working with our ceramic artist Karie Oakes. Students spent two sessions with her this week creating a sculpture representing their family sitting on a couch. They are amazing! We will let them sit and dry for the next couple of weeks before Karie returns after spring break to guide the students in adding glaze. I've posted a few pictures on the Photos page of the artists at work.
In reading we have been reviewing strategies for reading nonfiction text. Two of the lessons focused on reading the text and then zooming in on the pictures to add to their learning on the subject. We also talked about identifying the main idea or subject of the text by looking for words or ideas that repeated in the text. In writing we have been looking at the work of author/illustrator Ezra Jack Keats. We are using his work as mentor texts to inspire our own writing. We are also identifying specific parts of the author's craft and experimenting with these ideas. So far we have looked at how hyphens can be used to slow the reader down or provide a sense of drama, the use of sound words to create stronger images and how punctuation can be used to express emotion. In math we are continuing to work with 3-D shapes and we are also learning about fractions, specifically halves, thirds and fourths. Our calendar uses both analog and digital clocks to express time to the hour and half hour. This is something that would be great to practice with your child! I finished out the week watching some of our students perform in the Variety Show Friday night. What fun! Thank you Hazel, Mia Brines and Isabella for sharing your talents with the Glencoe Community. I am sending home a book order for March. It is a short turnaround since we have spring break at the end of the month. I'm hoping that if I submit the order on Friday the books will possibly arrive before vacation. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for supporting our classroom as your orders provide us with books for the classroom. We read some of his books, learned a little about his life and created a couple of art projects inspired by his books. Stop by to see our own Cat in the Hats and the beautiful watercolor fishes inspired by One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. They will honestly take your breath away - so much talent and creativity on display!
Speaking of art, we have just started our second artist residency. We are working with ceramic artist Karie Oakes. We started on Friday by exploring clay and various tools that students will be using to create their original sculpture. This Monday and Tuesday students will be creating their sculptures. We will then let them dry out and then do the first fire in the kiln before meeting with Karie again in April to add the glaze. Check out our artists in action on the Photos page. More photos to come from this week's sessions.
