I am just loving this sunshine! Spring is definitely here - finally! We are having so much fun in math exploring fractions. The standard in first grade is that students can divide circles and rectangles into 2 or 4 equal shares and use vocabulary such as halves and fourths. Students enjoyed playing fraction BINGO last week as they applied these concepts.
In reading we continue to build upon our comprehension strategies and will be practicing fluency this week. We are wrapping up our opinion unit in writing. Students have been working on book reviews and will be choosing one to publish as a final draft. Part of polishing up this final piece will include checking for punctuation, capitalization and spacing. I've updated the volunteer calendar for the month of May. So if you are interested in reading with kids, check it out! This past week we continued building upon the skills from last week. In reading we are focusing on learning as much about the important characters in our stories. This helps in understanding what we are reading. We also talked about how to decide if a detail is important and helps to move the story along.
In writing we began writing book reviews as part of our opinion unit. Students select a book they would recommend and state their opinion along with reasons to support their feelings. I love how this connects with the work we are doing in reading as well! In math we worked with 3D shapes more where students looked at the net (the pattern that you can cut and fold to make a model of a solid shape) and predict whether it will create the given 3D shape. Students then use polydrons to create the net and determine if their prediction was correct. You should have received communication from the district that the last day of school has been adjusted to Wednesday, June 12. Upcoming Dates Variety Show Tryouts Monday, April 22, 2:30 - 4:30 pm STEAM Night Planning Meeting Thursday, May 2, 2:30 - 3:30 pm Artist in Residence - Creative Movement Week of May 6th - 3 sessions Variety Show Rehearsal Monday, May 6, 2:30 - 4:30 pm PTA Meeting Tuesday, May 14, 6:30 - 7:30 pm Connect to Kindergarten Wednesday, May 15, 3:00 - 4:00 pm In math this week we continued to explore composite shapes and 3D shapes. We went on a walk around the school searching for 3D shapes and students brought home a sheet to try it at home as well. We found that rectangular prisms and cylinders were easiest to find and wonder if it will be similar at home!
In reading we are focusing our comprehension work around getting to know the characters in our stories. We will continue with this focus this week as well. Students are also practicing to retell their stories to their reading partners. I am impressed how thoughtful they are when working together. In writing students are finishing up their restaurant/toys/games/movie reviews and will begin to work on book reviews next. We focused on using a catchy introduction such as starting with a question to make your reader wonder. Students also worked with their partners to revise and edit one of their reviews. A highlight this week was our latest Art Infusion session. Students created pieces inspired by the work of Georgia O'keefe. The artwork is amazing! Be sure to stop by in the hallway to check it out. Upcoming Dates Principal's Coffee Tuesday, April 16, 8:15 - 9:00 am Courageous Conversations Thursday, April 18, 5:30 pm Book Order Due Friday, April 19 Report Cards Go Home Friday, April 19 Variety Show Tryouts Monday, April 22, 2:30 - 4:30 pm The first week of April is off to a great start! We've started our new unit during Readers Workshop, Meeting Characters and Learning Lessons: A Study of Story Elements. This week we focused on making predictions as we read and identifying the setting (time and place) of a story. We talked about how the setting can change throughout the story and how readers need to keep track as they read. Students practiced these skills both in their independent reading and with their reading partners.
In math we continued to work with identifying shapes by their attributes and naming the shapes. Students learned two new work places where they build larger composite shapes using familiar pattern block shapes. We will be moving from 2-D shapes to 3-D shapes next. In science students are learning about sound waves and experimented creating vibrations and exploring how sound can change when the vibrations change.
