I hope everyone enjoyed a restful spring break. I was able to get away to the coast for a few days of relaxation and time with family. I can't believe it is already April!
The week before break we finished our reading unit, Readers Have Big Jobs to Do. We will review those lessons and check in with readers during conferences to see how they are progressing toward end of the year goals. In math we launched our geometry unit and will continue to explore 2D and 3D shapes and be able to describe these shapes by their attributes. In science students are beginning to explore light and sound waves. The end of the 3rd quarter is this Friday so I will be updating assessments as well. We started our Opinion/Reviews unit in writing this week. Students used their collections to select a "best" or "favorite" to write about. The mini lessons this week focused on naming the topic, stating an opinion, giving a reason for the opinion and adding details. We also spent time on Monday taking a look at what everyone brought.
In reading we finishing up our latest unit Readers Have Big Jobs to Do. This week's lessons focused on different tools to use for understanding our books. Some tools include making a movie to picture what's happening and keeping track of who's talking. These tools are especially helpful as stories get longer and there is less support from illustrations. In math we finished up our unit on addition and subtraction within 20 with a little bit of measurement too. Students compared the heights of different penguins with their own height, recorded the information on a graph and calculated the difference. We are still working on time and money and will start our geometry unit soon. Next Friday is our next spirit day - Wild Hair! Upcoming Dates LGBTQ+ Equity Night Tuesday, March 19 5:30 - 7:30 pm Spirit Day - Wild Hair Friday, March 22 Book Orders Due Friday, March 22 Spring Break March 25 - March 29 It looks like the snow may be behind us and hopefully some warmer temperatures and sunshine are in our future!
Stop by the hallway and check out our new artwork from Art Infusion last Friday. Students used watercolor, salt, alcohol and ink pens to create coral reef seascapes. Thanks to our parent helpers for leading this fun activity (Owen's mom, Rye's mom, Walter's mom and Kelsey's mom and dad.) I've posted some pictures from the activity on the Photos page. Students brought home some of their writing last week as we are finishing up our nonfiction writing unit. This week we start opinion writing and students will be using the collections they brought from home to get going. In math we are finishing our addition and subtraction to 20 unit and working on time and money. In first grade the goal is for students to be able to tell time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock - this is a great concept to work on at home. Another thing families can work on is identifying and counting mixed coins. Up to now we have been working mainly with pennies, nickels and dimes. Upcoming Dates Ms. Schiada at a Training Tuesday, March 12 PTA Meeting Tuesday, March 12 8:15 am Art Infusion Training Tuesday, March 12 6:30 pm LGBTQ+ Equity Night Tuesday, March 19 5:30 - 7:30 pm Book Orders Due Friday, March 22 Spring Break March 25 - March 29 Well the weather certainly made things interesting last week! We still tried to keep things business as usual while adjusting the schedule for the late openings and snow day. Hopefully this week will start to look more like spring than winter!
One thing coming home this week is a letter and brown bag. The letter explains that we will be starting a new writing unit next week focusing on opinions. The lessons at the beginning of the unit involve students writing about a small collection they bring from home. They can bring 5 items that fit into the bag. They will be keeping the collection at school for a couple of weeks so it should be something they can "live without" for a few days. Example items include shells, rocks, coins, small figurines, toy cars, etc. Please let me know if your child is unable to bring something to school - I will have some items collected at school that they can choose from. In math we continue to working on addition and subtraction story problems within 20. Students are working to explain their thinking, identifying the strategy they used to solve the problem. Our next Art Infusion session is this Friday from 12:30 - 2:00. Please contact Owen's mom Julianna if you would like to help.
