As we move officially into fall I am amazed at everything we have already accomplished!
We have continued to build upon our routines in Literacy and Math. Students have been building their stamina for working independently during our Read to Self time. They were introduced to Work on Writing this week. I am so pleased with how much they love to write! While students are working on their reading and writing I have been meeting with them one on one to assess various literacy skills. I love this time to talk about what they like to read and help identify Just Right books. In Math our time is divided between whole group lessons and Work Places. Students work with combinations to 20 as we explore the many strategies that can be used to determine quantity. Some of these strategies include Counting by 1's, Counting On, Doubles and Adding 10. We are also in the middle of one of my absolutely favorite art units - Picasso! So far we have explored three periods of his artwork and learned a little bit about the life of this diverse artist. You will be able to see their beautiful work when you visit the classroom for Open House on Thursday. Reminders: Book Orders are due Wednesday, September 28 - you can order online or send an order form with your child. Open House is Thursday, September 29th You child will show you some of their favorite parts of first grade!

Week 2 is in the books! Each day is getting better and better. We have been reviewing procedures and adding new activities.
In Reading we are learning the structures of Daily Five. The first component is called Read to Self. Ask your child to tell you about the 3 Ways to Read a Book. We are building our stamina for reading quietly to ourselves. We also are now choose a comfortable spot to read. Imagine 20+ first graders laying on the carpet immersed in their books! Each week we will focus our comprehension work on a main story. This week we read Sam Come Back. We talked about the characters in the story. We also learned a few new reading responses including Creating a List and Labeled Diagram. In math students are using white boards to solve bug story problems. Next week they will be creating their own story problems for their classmates to solve. Our Number Corner calendar grid involves looking at different models for recording numbers including tally marks, manipulatives (popsicle sticks) and double ten frames. We are charting our data daily to uncover various patterns. We had our first full week of specials with music, P.E., guidance and library. Next week will be our first art session with Mrs. Brown. Information regarding homework will come home on Monday. Important Dates: Tuesday 9/20 School Photos Wednesday 9/21 Late Opening Wednesday 9/28 Book Orders Due Thursday 9/29 Back to School Night |
