We have some important dates coming up so I want to mention them right away!
Our next spirit day is this Friday and the theme is Super Heroes. We will also be celebrating our super volunteers that morning! Glencoe has a new t-shirt design created by our very own parent, Satchel's mom Katie! Order forms were sent home last week and are due Wednesday the 22nd. The annual Glencoe Storybook parade is coming up Friday, May 31st. Students are invited to dress as one of their favorite book characters. It is fun if they bring the book too so we all can see their inspiration. In writing we have finished our opinion unit and celebrated by reading our final pieces with our 3rd grade buddies. They also just finished a unit where they created their own version of a fairytale. The 3rd graders read their stories to their buddies. It was a fun way for both classes to celebrate their hard work. The first graders have also recorded themselves reading their review in their digital portfolio on Seesaw. They were inspired a bit by the book reviews at the end of Reading Rainbow episodes. They did a great job reading with expression. Check them out! We have also started our final science unit and it is one of my favorites. Students are exploring how nature inspires scientist and engineers. Last week they examined two different kinds of beaks - a starling and a duck. They explored how the different styles of beaks are best for certain foods which then led to comparisons to tweezers (starling) and spoons or scoops (duck). Upcoming Dates T-Shirt orders Due Wednesday, May 22 Spirit Day - Super Heroes! I am filled with gratitude for all of the lovely notes, flowers, treats and gifts. Your generosity was a bit overwhelming - I am a fortunate teacher. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
This past week students worked with Miss Nicole from Dance Your Heart Out. She provided a wonderful introduction to our next science unit - biomimicry. Students explored what mimicry means and examined some of nature's inspirations. In reading we are continuing to read fables and identify the lessons or morals of the stories. We are also practicing our comparing and contrasting skills by reading different versions of the same stories. The final book order of the year is due this Friday. It's a great chance to stock up on some books for summer reading! STEAM Night is this Friday as well. Come and experience some fun activities! Upcoming Dates PTA Meeting Tuesday, May 14, 6:30 - 7:30 pm Connect to Kindergarten Wednesday, May 15, 3:00 - 4:00 pm Final Book Order Due Friday, May 17 STEAM Night Friday, May 17, 5:30 - 7:30 pm Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast Friday, May 24, 8:20 - 10:00 am Memorial Day - No School Monday, May 27 Storybook Parade Friday, May 31, 9:00 - 10:00 am We welcomed May with another fun week in first grade - the sunshine sure is nice as well!
Last week we had a final Art Infusion lesson for first grade. Students created panda and bamboo paintings. This fabulous artwork is on display outside our room - be sure to check it out! I want to thank Owen's mom Julianna for organizing each session and all of the parents who helped with all of the different lessons this year. The students really have grown in their skills and having such patient guidance made for wonderful experiences. In reading we spent time talking more about the characters in our stories. We identified both "inside" and "outside" traits. Inside traits are those you cannot see like feelings and emotions. Sometimes the author will tell what the character is feeling but sometimes the reader has to use their inference skills. The outside traits are what you can see such has what the character looks like. We are also identifying the lessons the characters learn in the story. In writing students are finishing up their book reviews. Last week they finished writing their first drafts and will use a checklist to make sure they have all of the components of an opinion piece. Students will then revise their piece and edit for spelling, punctuation and capitalization. The final step will be to rewrite their final copy. In math we are revisting place value. Students are creating 2-digit numbers using bundles of 10's and 1's and then combining the quantities for a total. This will then lead to working with adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.
