The first grade train is rapidly approaching the station - it is hard to believe how fast everything is moving.
In math, science and social studies we are starting our Farm Unit. During this unit students will be creating a farm by buying land, buildings, livestock and crops. They will use farm dollars ($1, $5 and $10) and planning the layout of their farms while also calculating area and perimeter. Students will learn facts about the different animals and the different equipment found on the farm. All of this will come in handy for our All About writing unit where students will eventually write all about their farm. One of the highlights of this unit will be our fieldtrip to Zenger Farm on Tuesday, May 30th. This is my first time so I am really looking forward to the trip! In reading we are still exploring informational text and identifying text features. I also continue to assess each student in fluency, comprehension and phonics. We have an artist in residence session this Wednesday with Spyglass Theater. After an assembly each first grade class will have a session where they will create their own insect - should be fun! Important Dates Wednesday May 17 Spyglass Theater assembly (9:30) and residency (12:20) Thursday May 18 Permission slips due Friday May 19 Final Scholastic Book Order due

I have to begin with a heartfelt thank you for all the love during Teacher Appreciation Week. The meals, snacks, coffee, school supplies and gift cards were overwhelming in their generosity. My favorites though were the hand written cards from students and their families. I am humbled by your kind words and grateful for your support. I really do love coming to work each day to learn, explore and laugh with 29 unique children! Last week was fun-filled. We had a great time on our fieldtrip. Everyone enjoyed the version of Robin Hood the performers presented and we compared the play with the two different versions that we had read in class. The Annual Art Show was Thursday night. It was so fun to see all of the projects from the year in one place. I will send home the student work on the next dry day! Friday was Run for the Arts. We got a bit wet but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm! Pledge sheets were sent home on Friday and are due back with the money collected on 19th. This week we will be back to our usual routine. I will be starting to sprinkle in various assessments over the next few weeks. I'm hoping that if I can do a little at a time we will be able to keep things as "normal" as possible. In math we continue our geometry unit which will also integrate work with fractions. Towards the end of the week we will start our farm unit. This is a combination math/writing/social studies unit that will include a fieldtrip to a working farm at the end of May. More information will be sent home soon!
