These next two weeks will be full of action! Having a 5 day week last week found us getting back into our routines. We started a new artist study. Since there is an Andy Warhol exhibit at the Portland Art Museum we are exploring some of his work. Pop Art is very engaging with the bright colors and familiar designs. We started with a piece inspired by his Campbell Soup Can artwork. Students used oil pastels to create a bold 4-square background. They then put a very familiar image - a Crayola crayon, in the center of each square. I'll post a photo of our bulletin board tomorrow!
In reading we have been exploring character. As we read stories we identify character traits and use evidence from the text to support our answers. We also indicate if it is an outside trait (physical characteristics like boy/girl/spider, color, clothing, etc.) or an inside trait (personality and emotional characteristics like friendly, clever, helpfur, etc.). Since we just finished our read aloud of Charlotte's Web we completed character webs for both Charlotte and Wilbur. Your child will be bringing home information about an online program called Reflex Math. The goal of Reflex Math is to develop fluency with basic facts, Typically this program is designed for students at grade 2 or above who understand the basic concepts behind the operations of addition and subtraction. Our school has a site license so it is available to all students. We will take a small amount of class time for students to explore the program. While it won't be a significant component to our classroom instruction I hope to have it available as a choice during Work Places. I am sending home an informational letter with login details for students who would like to use this program at home. Please let me know if you have any questions.
