We are going to give Run for the Arts another try this week. First graders will be running from 8:30 - 9:00 on Friday. Hopefully the rain will stay away!
We are looking forward to our fieldtrip to the Northwest Children's Theater on Thursday. We should be back to school at around 11:45. Since this is past our regular lunch time we will be eating in the classroom and then we'll have our recess break. Thursday night is the annual Glencoe Art Show. Students have selected two of the art pieces they completed during our Art Infusion sessions. Come see all the artwork Glencoe students have been creating! The show begins at 6:00. In math we are continuing our geometry unit. This week the focus will be on exploring 3-D shapes. Students will name shapes and describe by their attributes. They will also use polydrons (a VERY popular math manipulative) to construct cubes, triangular prisms and pyramids. In reading we continuing to work on identifying the problem and the solution for the stories we read together and those they read independently. A fun activity from this past week were the collages students made inspired by Matisse and the book Drawing with Scissors. We also read the book When Pigasso met Mootisse. It was fun to revisit the work of Picasso!

We have a busy week ahead with one of the school year's most popular events on Friday - Run for the Arts. Students have been busy gathering sponsors - sheets are due on Tuesday! First grade is scheduled to run from 8:30 - 9:00. If you would like to help out there is a sign up sheet posted by the cafeteria. If it rains the event will be rescheduled.
We have a fieldtrip planned for next Thursday, May 4th. Please turn in permission slips and money by this Wednesday. After that I will notify parents if their names were drawn to be chaperones. I really wish we could take more adults but unfortunately we are limited to 4 chaperones. We have another fieldtrip to Zenger Farms coming up at the end of May so there will be another opportunity. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive group of parents - thank you for understanding about the limited spots. A big thank you to our parent volunteers for the Art Infusion lesson last week. Students did a watercolor of cherry blossoms. They had so much fun with the different techniques. Photos posted on the Photos page. In reading we have been working on identifying the setting of stories both read aloud and read independently. Students are using both illustrations and text as evidence to support their thinking. We will be moving on to talking about problem and solution over the new couple of weeks. I writing students are finishing a piece where they state an opinion about one of Ezra Jack Keats' books. They then support their opinion with at least two reasons. They will be selecting their own topic to write an opinion about this week as well. In math we are beginning our geometry unit. This week will include identifying and describing 2 dimensional shapes by their attributes. Important Dates Tuesday, April 25th Run for the Arts sponsor sheets due Wednesday, April 26th Permission slips due Friday, April 28th Run for the Arts Thursday, May 4th Fieldtrip to Northwest Children's Theater We are well into our newest writing unit - Opinions! We have been using the books of author Ezra Jack Keats during this unit as students identify what they like or don't like about a book and support their opinion. They will be writing an original piece this week where they state and opinion and write at least three supporting reasons.
In addition to read books by Ezra Jack Keats we are finishing up our fable unit. We have one more story to explore and then we will be focusing on the songs that go with the fables. We are hoping to be performance ready by mid to late May. I know it will be here before we know it! We are also still focusing on retelling stories with a beginning, middle and end by identifying the important events. In math we are continuing to work with facts to 20 identifying different strategies to add and subtract. Some of the strategies include: doubles, doubles +/- 1, Add 10, Add 9 and make 10. We were also working with the commutative property through the use of Double Flap cards. This week will be focused on story problems that involve joining, separating and comparing amounts. Upcoming Dates Thursday, April 20 Art Infusion Friday, April 21 Book order due Friday, April 21 Sports Day! Friday, April 28 Run for the Arts I apologize for the lack of posts lately but hope this one will get us back on track.
We're are getting back into the swing of things since our return from Spring Break. We are continuing our fable unit. This week we focused on the fable, The Crow and the Pitcher. Students identified adjectives to describe the character and also retold the story to include the beginning, middle and end. This was also a great story to reinforce April's word of the month - perseverance. At our Wednesday Morning Meeting we were treated to a kick off for Run For the Arts. Information letters and sponsor sheets came home this week. The children are already very excited to lace up their running shoes and get moving! In math we are using story problems to reinforce addition and subtraction strategies that include make 10, Add 10, Add 9, Doubles and Doubles +1. Students are also using an open number line to solve double digit equations. I am very impressed with how quickly they have grasped using this helpful model. Our most exciting news is that we welcomed a new student on Friday! We were so happy to meet Landen and everyone has been so helpful showing him the ropes in Room 108! |
