We are all about the musical right now. We are practicing our songs, making scenery and props and deciding on the best ways to act out the songs. We are having so much fun and hope you will be able to join us next week!
Every week brings more fun events. Last week's Field Day was great - I'll post some photos for everyone to enjoy. This Friday is the Storybook Parade - a fabulous Glencoe tradition! Students get to select a favorite story and create a costume to go with their book. The entire school participates as we march through the neighborhood and celebrate so many wonderful books. We will also begin celebrating our summer birthdays this week – providing us the opportunity to celebrate our classmates! If you still plan on ordering any books through Scholastic I would like to submit the order by Wednesday of this week.
I am sending home a Save the Date flyer for our Aesop's Fables performance. The plan is to present a few Reader's Theater fables and then perform our musical. The plan is to start at 1:30 on Tuesday, June 2nd. I'm hoping that will be plenty of time! We will perform in our classroom. It will be cozy but much easier to hear their beautiful voices. I know there will be some folks who are unable to attend so I am hoping that if someone videos the performance they will be willing to share. We'll be spending the next couple of weeks practicing our songs, the reader's theater scripts, making props and a backdrop. It will be busy but fun! In math we've been working with recognizing, describing and extending number patterns - just a little algebra to end our year! We'll be exploring fractions a bit more by folding and flying paper gliders over the next two weeks. My goal is to keep them out of the light fixtures! In science we continue to explore different ways that nature has inspired engineering and design. What a week! Please accept my heartfelt thanks for the fantastic week. The treats, lunch, fruit basket, gift cards and beautiful flowers were just wonderful. My favorites were the handwritten notes and cards from my most favorite first graders! What a lucky teacher to get to spend my days with such kind and thoughtful children. Thank you!
A permission slip came home last week for your child to participate in a classroom conversation about our new reading adoption this year. I will be leading the the discussion with the students asking them a few questions about their learning experiences this year. There will be a couple of researchers taking notes on our conversation. Participation is voluntary and students without permission slips will remain in the classroom working on an activity at their desks. In case you have misplaced the permission slip I will send copies home again. Our fifteen minute discussion will take place on Thursday, May 17 at 11:00. Glencoe's first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Night is this Friday. Student art from both Art Infusion and the classroom will be on display. There will also be science projects on display and science and math activities for everyone to enjoy. Hope to see you there! This past week students learned a bit about the artist Paul Klee. Inspired by his artwork, Cat and Bird students created their own piece using a combination of oil pastels and collage. I'll post a few photos of the artists at work. Their artwork is beautiful! Dates to Remember Wednesday, May 16 Late Opening Thursday, May 17 11:00 Literacy Conversation Friday, May 18 Book Orders Due Friday, May 18 5:30 - 8:00 STEAM Night We are inching our way onto the first grade finish line and I will be starting to sprinkle in various assessments over the next few weeks. I'm hoping that if I can do a little at a time we will be able to keep things as "normal" as possible. In math we continue to work with 2-digit addition and subtract as well as elapsed time. We did a fun introduction into comparing what seconds, minutes and hours feel like and what can be accomplished during these different time segments.
We added two new fables to our collection this week: The Boy Who Cried Wolf and Androcles and the Lion. These provided great opportunities to identify the lesson in a story. We also started a new science unit this week and our music teacher, Mrs. Davidson, joined us for our first session. Students used jeweler's loupes to examine sweet gum tree seed pods and record their thinking. This led to a discussion on the invention of velcro. We will be looking at other ways that nature has inspired people to develop new ways to solve everyday problems. I'll post some pictures that show our scientists at work. The first graders will have their sculptures on display in the classroom this Thursday at 1:50. We would love to have you stop by for a look and students will also share a poem they have written to go along with their artwork. At the end of the day the the sculptures will be sent home.
