It was wonderful to see so many of you at Back to School Night! I loved having a chance to connect with families but I especially loved watching the excitement of the kids as they showed you all around their "home away from home". Sign up forms for parent/teacher conferences in November were also available that evening. If you were unable to attend please contact me or the office and we can get you on the schedule. The office would like me to let you know about a new Visitor/Volunteer Sign-in Process (Raptor) the district is rolling out to all schools. The first time will take more time but after that it should be pretty quick and easy. The process requires visitors/volunteers to provide a government-issued ID that is scanned into the system. Once the office has scanned your ID and they are approved (which happens instantly & one-time only) you can sign in using the Kiosk for your visits. We have a couple of fun events coming up - Run for the Arts and Rainbow Day. They are both set for Thursday, October 10th. First graders will be running in the morning from 9:25 - 9:55. We never know what the weather might bring so be sure to have your runner dress in layers just in case. They can also bring a water bottle. It will also be Rainbow Day and 1st graders wear blue! Back to School Night is this Thursday! Your children are excited for you to visit their classroom and see what we have been doing this first month of school. You will also have a chance to stop by the cafeteria and sign up for a conference in November. I am looking forward to seeing everyone!
This week we continued learning about Picasso by discussing his Blue Period. After looking at examples of his work during this time they explored creating different shades of blue by mixing blue, white and black paints. They then used these colors to create their own art piece. During our Word Work (phonics) lessons we have been exploring the names of our classmates. This week we focused on short vowels, blends and digraphs. Students had fun looking for these letters in our names and classroom labels. They are already making great connections in their reading and writing. Upcoming Dates Thursday, September 26 STOPPS Bus Safety, 10:05 am Thursday, September 26 Back to School Night 5:30 - 7 pm Wednesday, October 3 Wednesday Morning Meeting, 8:20 am Tuesday, October 8 PTA Meeting 8:15 am Thursday, October 10 Run for the Arts - Time TBD Friday, October 11 No School Tuesday, October 15 Art Infusion Training, 6:30 - 8:00 pm Friday, October 25 Harvest Festival, 5:30 - 7:30 pm We are two weeks in to our first science unit, Spinning Sky. This unit explores the patterns of the sun and moon. We started by discussing shadows. Used flashlights to explore how shadows change shape and direction based on the location of the light source. Your child brought home a gnome this past week. We took our gnomes out to the playground three times during the day and traced the shadows. We then discussed why the shadow changed at different times of the day.
We also had our first art experience, learning about Pablo Picasso. I like to start the year with this artist because we can use a variety of mediums while also looking at many of his different styles. Children really connect to seeing that art can be expressed in so many different ways. We started with his early works and created a realistic piece using markers. Photos from both our science lessons and art can be found on the Photos page of the blog. Reminder: Picture Day is Tuesday and book orders are due on Friday! Upcoming Dates Tuesday, September 17 Picture Day Tuesday, September 17 Art Infusion Training Friday, September 20 Book Order Due Thursday, September 26 Back to School Night 5:30 - 7 pm We worked on finalizing our classroom agreements following our Toolbox curriculum where students identify their rights and responsibilities by answering the questions: What do I need to feel safe and enjoy learning at school? and What do I need to do for myself and my classmates to feel safe and enjoy learning? Here are the agreements we settled on.
