It was fun to see folks at the Glencoe Auction Saturday night. What a great way to celebrate our wonderful community. I can't tell you how many people came up to me to say how much they loved our class' art project. Thank you to Satchel's mom for taking this on and lending us your time and talent. In math we are continuing to work with facts to 20 identifying different strategies to add and subtract. Some of the strategies include: doubles, doubles +/- 1, Add 10, Add 9 and make 10. We were also working with the commutative property through the use of Double Flap cards. This week will be focused on story problems that involve joining, separating and comparing amounts. We have begun our newest unit of study in ready titled, Readers Have Big Jobs To Do: Fluency, Phonics and Comprehension. I am looking forward to all this includes. We started this week with reminding students to do a "triple-check" when they are figuring out tricky words. We sorted our strategies into three groups, matching them with the questions readers ask themselves when they self-monitor: Does it Look Right? Does it Sound Right? and Does it Make Sense?. Students identified one strategy that they use independently and will be selecting one to work on. Setting goals is such a valuable skill! Ask your child what their current reading goal is. Two big events in first grade both happened this week - and thanks to the snow day they were on the same day! We have been keeping track of the number of days in school and the milestone of the 100th day was on Thursday. Since this was also Valentine's Day we celebrated the number 100 both Thursday and Friday. We read the story, Wolf's Chicken Stew where the main character Wolf thinks he is fattening up Chicken for his dinner by delivering items such as 100 pancakes, a 100 pound cake and 100 cookies. Imagine his surprise when he makes his final visit to Chicken's house only to be thanked enthusiastically by her 100 chicks as they smothered him with 100 kisses. I surprised the class by hiding 100 chocolate kisses around the classroom that they needed to find and place on a 100 grid. You can see photos of the fun on our Photos page. We found almost all of them. Students also wrote 100 words, counted and graphed the different toppings on a 100 topping pizza and wrote about celebrating their 100th birthday. Valentine's Day was another fun event as students spread the love and friendship with their classmates. It is always one of my favorite days to watch and listen as they seek each other out and thank them for their cards. There are still a couple of spots left for the Craftacular afternoon event being offered through the auction! See item #914 in the auction catalog. Upcoming Dates Wednesday, February 19 Coffee with the Principal 8:15 am Wednesday, February 19 PTA fundraiser at Laughing Planet Friday, February 22 Book Order Due Saturday, February 23 Grow Glencoe Auction, 5:30 pm Thursday, February 28 Courageous Conversations About Race 5:30 - 8:00 Well the weather certainly has been exciting lately! I hope everyone has enjoyed some fun in the snow.
Last week we started to wrap up our nonfiction unit in readers workshop. It has been wonderful to see the level of engagement and learning as our first grade readers explore so many different topics. I love hearing, "Ms. Schiada did you know...?" at the end of every workshop. Some of the different skills students are practicing include: Mark Interesting Parts, Figure Out How the Book is Organized, and Explain and Think About Keywords. As we work to develop comprehension strategies, we learned about identifying and remembering important details. We will continue writing nonfiction stories for the next couple of weeks and have been connecting the strategies for reading nonfiction text with writing skills. In math we combined a little nonfiction reading with our math skills by learning facts about two different kinds of penguins - the Rockhopper and the King. We gathered and compared data and used measuring tapes to determine the height of each penguin. Students then compared the heights of these penguins with their own height. The Grow Glencoe Auction is coming up in the next couple weeks! Our first grade art project will be available for bidding as will an afternoon of crafting with me! If you would like to help, contact Owen's mom Julianna at [email protected]. Another fun day coming up is Valentine's Day on Thursday the 14th. I sent home a letter about Valentine's Day in Room 108 on Friday. If it didn't make it home let me know and I will send another copy.
