December is off to a great start! In Readers Workshop we have been talking about strategies to use when taking a closer look at tricky words. This week our lessons focused in breaking off the ending (-ed, -er, -ing), looking out for vowel teams (oa, ow, ee, etc.) and watching out for unusual words (contractions). It was fun looking for examples of words that could be figured out using one of these strategies.
In math we are working on using comparing situations to model subtraction. We also continue to work on developing visual models to show quantities greater than 10. In writing we continue working on our How-To stories. Students worked with their writing partners to act out the steps of their How-To piece to see if it makes sense. Students then went back and revised their work to make it even better! Our new snap words this week were: next, now, put, then, your. We are practicing using these words in our writing! My favorite thing so far this year started this week. I read a book at home where the main character and his sister play a game called O.A.T. The initials stand for One Awesome Thing. Each person says one awesome thing that happened during their day and when everyone is finished they say, "And tomorrow will be even better!". I decided to give this a go and am so thankful I did. Thursday and Friday afternoon we gathered in a circle to share One Awesome Thing that happened that day. It can be as simple as pizza for lunch, reading a good book or playing with a friend. What a wonderful way to end our day! I hope we can do this at least most every day! Be sure to ask your child what their O.A.T. was for the day! It is hard to believe it is December! In Readers Workshop we have been talking about how to use snap words to figure out unfamiliar words. Snap words are words we know in a snap (sight words and/or high frequency words). For example play is a snap word. Readers can use what they know about this word to read other words like playing, spray and playground.
In math students are practicing explaining how they solve addition and subtraction problems. Did they use a counting strategy? Derived fact? (doubles, doubles +1) or a known fact. We will also continue working on including an equation that accurately represents the situation. In Writers Workshop we've started our How-To unit. We've spent some time looking at mentor texts to identify what characteristics many of these books have in common. They are selecting a topic that they feel they can teach someone how to do and writing the steps describing the process. The kindergarten classes are doing their annual service project collecting items to fill care bags for the houseless community now through December 14th. You can add donated items to the large yellow bin in the front entry.Items being collected include hygiene items, new socks and snacks.
