I enjoyed meeting with so many of you during conferences. I appreciate having the chance to get to know you and your child better and share all the fabulous things they are doing in first grade. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have follow up questions or ideas.
The Friday before conferences we had an all school celebration for earning Gull Tickets. Flop & Read was a huge success! Students gathered in the hallway and in the classroom and snuggled with their stuffies as they read. It was so fun to see! I've posted a few photos from the event on the Photos page of the blog. We have finished our first writing unit - students will be bringing home lots of their work from the past few weeks. It is fun to see how much their writing has developed these first few weeks of school. We will be starting a new unit this week where students will be writing How-To pieces. We will also do some real-life experiences to help give us ideas on what to write about.

We had our first art infusion lesson and the results are beautiful. Be sure to check out the artwork hanging outside the classroom inspired by Monet's water lily paintings. I really appreciate the art infusion volunteers and the students loved the whole process. The next art infusion training for volunteers is Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
I have been working on collecting work samples to share with you at Parent Conferences next week. If you haven't had a chance to sign up you can call the office and they will share the available times. I look forward to meeting with everyone! We have a spirt day this Friday - College Day! Students can wear gear and/or colors celebrating their favorite colleges. We also have an all school celebration for collecting enough Gull tickets to reach the next line in our collection box. The last half hour of the day will be dedicated to a whole school Flop and Read. Students can bring a stuffie friend (must fit in their backpack) to read with. We will be filling the hallways with readers on Friday! In writer's workshop students finished our Small Moments narrative unit. They chose one of their stories to revise, edit, rewrite, illustrate and publish. I will be sharing their final piece at conferences. Students will also have a chance to record themselves reading their story and adding it to their See Saw journal. Your child will be bringing home the drafts of their other stories this week too. Upcoming Dates Spirit Day - College Day Friday, November 16 Flop and Read Friday, November 16 1:45 pm Conferences - No School Monday, November 19 - 20 November is underway and promises to move quickly! There will be a few adjustments to our regular routines and then of course the days off for Veteran's Day, parent conferences and Thanksgiving. If you haven't had a chance to sign up for a conference please contact the office. They have a master schedule and can let you know of available times. I am looking forward to meeting with everyone! As I have mentioned before, we are part of a district technology grant called TechSmart. Our school benefits from having a part time TechSmart coach who works with teachers and students in using technology in the classroom. As the year progresses we will be adding to our resources. We have a half-class set of chromebooks that we are using more and more each day. On Friday we learned about the program See Saw. There are so many different ways to use this resource and we are just getting started. Students learned to use the photo and microphone tools to add a picture and recording to their journals. In the future students will be able to record and share their work and we will be able to share their journals with their families. More to come! In reader's workshop we have been working on partner reading. Students practiced using a new tool called the Partner Planner. Before they begin working together they decide how they are going to read (echo reading, choral reading or see saw-taking turns) and then what they will do at the end (retell a favorite part, have a book talk, ask questions, etc.) Upcoming Dates Wednesday Morning Meeting Wednesday, November 7, 8:20 am Art Infusion Wednesday, November 7, 10:00 Veteran's Day - No School Monday, November 12 Spirit Day - College Day Friday, November 16 Conferences - No School Monday, November 19 - 20 |
