It is hard to believe it is December! In Readers Workshop we have been talking about how to use snap words to figure out unfamiliar words. Snap words are words we know in a snap (sight words and/or high frequency words). For example play is a snap word. Readers can use what they know about this word to read other words like playing, spray and playground.
In math students are practicing explaining how they solve addition and subtraction problems. Did they use a counting strategy? Derived fact? (doubles, doubles +1) or a known fact. We will also continue working on including an equation that accurately represents the situation. In Writers Workshop we've started our How-To unit. We've spent some time looking at mentor texts to identify what characteristics many of these books have in common. They are selecting a topic that they feel they can teach someone how to do and writing the steps describing the process. The kindergarten classes are doing their annual service project collecting items to fill care bags for the houseless community now through December 14th. You can add donated items to the large yellow bin in the front entry.Items being collected include hygiene items, new socks and snacks.
