Well the weather certainly has been exciting lately! I hope everyone has enjoyed some fun in the snow.
Last week we started to wrap up our nonfiction unit in readers workshop. It has been wonderful to see the level of engagement and learning as our first grade readers explore so many different topics. I love hearing, "Ms. Schiada did you know...?" at the end of every workshop. Some of the different skills students are practicing include: Mark Interesting Parts, Figure Out How the Book is Organized, and Explain and Think About Keywords. As we work to develop comprehension strategies, we learned about identifying and remembering important details. We will continue writing nonfiction stories for the next couple of weeks and have been connecting the strategies for reading nonfiction text with writing skills. In math we combined a little nonfiction reading with our math skills by learning facts about two different kinds of penguins - the Rockhopper and the King. We gathered and compared data and used measuring tapes to determine the height of each penguin. Students then compared the heights of these penguins with their own height. The Grow Glencoe Auction is coming up in the next couple weeks! Our first grade art project will be available for bidding as will an afternoon of crafting with me!
