The first grade train is rapidly approaching the station - it is hard to believe how fast everything is moving.
In math, science and social studies we are starting our Farm Unit. During this unit students will be creating a farm by buying land, buildings, livestock and crops. They will use farm dollars ($1, $5 and $10) and planning the layout of their farms while also calculating area and perimeter. Students will learn facts about the different animals and the different equipment found on the farm. All of this will come in handy for our All About writing unit where students will eventually write all about their farm. One of the highlights of this unit will be our fieldtrip to Zenger Farm on Tuesday, May 30th. This is my first time so I am really looking forward to the trip! In reading we are still exploring informational text and identifying text features. I also continue to assess each student in fluency, comprehension and phonics. We have an artist in residence session this Wednesday with Spyglass Theater. After an assembly each first grade class will have a session where they will create their own insect - should be fun! Important Dates Wednesday May 17 Spyglass Theater assembly (9:30) and residency (12:20) Thursday May 18 Permission slips due Friday May 19 Final Scholastic Book Order due
